| PROJECT SIGNIFICANCE |
Located within
the large farming region of the Delaware Bay Watershed, the
MacKannan property is in close proximity to preserved farmland
as well as prime agricultural lands ripe for preservation, but
threatened by the wave of development crossing the region.
Acquisition of this property by
the South Jersey Land and Water Trust will serve to establish
a preservation foothold in the significantly threatened locale
of the Oldman's Creek Watershed and Raccoon Oldman's Farm Belt.
It will also act as a catalyst and encourage additional preservation
of contiguous properties along the creek and in the surrounding
area
. |
| PROJECT DESCRIPTION |
The
preservation of this forested property in Oldman's Creek Watershed
will provide multiple opportunities, which include:
-
The preservation
of a significant deciduous forest habitat with many mature
oaks and beech providing valuable song bird habitat;
-
The only public boating access
to Oldman's Creek with a boat landing, dock and significant
stream frontage;
-
Public nature
and hiking trails;
-
Protection
of the natural scenic character of the creek and the town
of Auburn;
-
Preservation
of the historic circa 1790 home and historic Boy Scouts
of America Camp Kimble history of the site, and enhancement
of a larger Oldman's Creek Greenway effort; and
-
The preservation of the MacKannan Property will encourage
the preservation of contiguous properties along the creek
in both Salem and Gloucester County.
